Smart Poodle Publishing wants to help kids learn more about the world, so we have created Ask Lilly Badilly: All About the World. Simply ask Lilly Badilly a geography question, and she will share that question on video with viewers everywhere. Author and former travel writer Debbie Glade will help Lilly answer those questions.
Q. Why did you create Ask Lilly Badilly?
A. Many American school students do not receive much exposure to geography knowledge, and we want to help change that. Often schools place a great emphasis on standardized tests that usually cover only reading, writing and math skills. That may not leave much time for teaching geography and other subjects. Debbie Glade visits schools and libraries with her book, The Travel Adventures of Lilly P Badilly: Costa Rica and encourages students to learn all they can about the US and the rest of the world. They have a lot of fun playing a geography game! Debbie was a travel researcher and writer for cruise lines for 15 years.Q. What type of questions should I ask?
A. Anything that interests you is worth asking. You may want to ask detailed and interesting questions about the world, such as: “What is the northernmost city on earth?” or “What types of animals can you find in the Seychelles Islands?” It is also okay to ask questions about world and US history as they relate to geography, such as: “Which US state has produced the most US Presidents?” Or maybe you’ll want to know something about human geography like: “Where were the Mayans from, and what do we know about them?”Q. Who can ask questions?
A. Ask Lilly Badilly was created for kids, but anyone is welcome to ask us a geography question. We’d love to hear from teachers and parents too.Q. Will every question asked be answered by Ask Lilly Badilly?
A. It may not be possible to answer every question, but we will answer as many interesting questions as possible.Q. How are the questions answered?
A. We videotape the questions and answers, which are linked to youtube.Q. What can I do on my own to learn more about the world?
A. First, ask your parents to get you a map of the word to hang on a wall in your house. You can buy these at bookstores or on line, and they are not expensive. Look at that map to learn where cities, countries, oceans and seas are located. Also go to your school or public library in your town and look at the great reference books about geography. Pick a part of the world that interests you and learn what you can about it by reading books and researching on line. You might want to start with your own city and state. You can look up the state capitals of the USA. The five Great Lakes and the locations of the major US National Parks are also good to research. Go on line and visit National Geographic for Kids. Also, tell your teachers and your parents you want more classes about geography! And let them know about The National Council of Geographic Education.Q. What is The National Council of Geographic Education?
A. This organization located in Washington DC is dedicated to the teaching and learning of geography. It helps schools and teachers by providing them with teaching materials and promotes the importance of geography knowledge in our students. Smart Poodle Publishing is a proud member of The National Council of Geographic Education. This organization is awesome!
